Poinsettia in SF

One of my favorite things to do is walk around San Francisco. I am pretty sure you will find something interesting on your walk. For me, I love looking for plants or little hidden street art.

Last month, I was walking towards the Castro to have a cocktail and this gem caught me by surprise. I was across the street and amazed by the red colors and my mind was flipping through the Rolodex of plants I know. It was not clicking until I got closer to it.

To my surprise it was a Poinsettia bush! I was always told to toss these as we cant grow them in our area. I've never seen one as bush/tree or this big period! Oh course that saying, "Only in San Francisco!" can apply here as the climate is perfect to grow just about anything! You will find an orchid growing right next to a cactus in peoples urban gardens and all they say is, I just water it!

This gorgeous plant in the picture resides in the Mission and did make me a happy person, especially it being the holiday season.

My New Year was calm one, Mike and I went to Avenue Q (which was the first time I've seen it). It did not disappoint. Such a fun show.

ALC Hacks!

Here are a few tips that I personally used to help life on the ride much easier.

The compact reusable bag
Hauling things around can be made simple by having a Compact Reusable Bag. This bag will help free up your hands walking to your bike, leaving bike parking, and going to the showers.

This bag should be compact so that it can be stuffed in your saddle. It could hold your water bottles, your helmet and many other items that will free up your hands. Especially if you are a wakeup-dressup-teardown tent-bag2gear-breakfast2bike kinda person... dont worry it'll make sense eventually

MOIST Free!!
Yeah I said it so what... but you can avoid it by purchasing a shower cap to cover up your bike seat. Its a great way to protect it from the weather.

To even step up your game, you get a really odd pattern or the brightest color to spot your bike from the sea of thousands of other bike because believe me, you will NOT always get Peter pan.. again, this will make sense later on.

CHARGE!!!
We all have cell phones and we know we love social media either its Facebook, Tinder, SnapChat or whatever. We have a mobile device that needs juice. So what you need is an awesome battery pack to keep connected for 7days and yes you can do it. To charge your Mobile Phone, GoPro, and/or Bike Computer I recommend a battery pack that has 10,000mAh or more. This should keep you out of the crazy electric tent.

For you to survive 7days on a charge this is what I do. I'm not saying you need to do it but from my experience this has worked for the past 3 rides I've done.

1) Airplane mode: while on your bike make sure your phone is Airplane Mode so that you can take those awesome pictures when you are not riding your bike because you will see some amazing things along the way from Father & Mother Natures creations, DOLPHINS, Bearded Drag Queens at Mission, Muscle guys in tutus, to even maybe Ellen.. yes THAT ELLEN!

Also use this mode while charging and anytime you are not using your phone. It will save your battery life on your device. Then at night start to upload those awesome shots of you reaching the top of that hill.

2) Charge your devices while sleeping

Ziplock Gallon Bags and dryer sheets
No Gurl we aint making sammiches, this is where you put your cycling clothes in when packing. each jersey or kit in each bag. Its a great way to organize your gear and it compacts your clothes too when trying to stuff that bag of yours.

The dryer sheets are amazing especially when you are done wearing your sweaty gear. Pack your soiled gear back in your ziplock and throw a sheet in their to reduce that stank. Because your bag may be cooking out in the sun when the gear truck unloads it. It also helps unpacking when getting home much more bearable

LIGHTS, maybe not camera, but action!
Headlamps is something you will need. Its great to use when navigating around the moving city at night, its great when you pooping in the porta-pottie, its great when you need something in your bag, or when you are fluffing up your tutu for red dress day the night before.

I bought a cheap headlamp for like $12, nothing fancy and it did the work for 2 rides. I just changed the batteries.

Earplugs
When you finally get to meet your tent neighbors and you look at them and think, that sweet girl right there is going to be nice to have next to me as she will be silent. Then lights go out and what do you hear... A FART, the giggles that follow, snoring... let me say that again SNORING! You cannot get away from that for sure... and you will not look at the sweet girl again as she just ripped the best perfect 10 Fart. Go half's with a friend to split a packet of earplugs, not the most comfortable thing but you get used to them.

Binder Clips
Were not here doing office work but the binder clips can be used for drying out your clothes clipped to the fence or to the top of your tent. Its very important to dry out your towel and binder clips always done the job. and its very useful to clip things together. You never know when you need something to bind together.

THAT'S MINE!
You may know already, but all of the tents look the same and we are staying on a wonderful grid. Get something that you can put near your tent so that you can spot while looking down the tent rows. Pink Flamingos, Flags, or for me, I like to hang some odd toy from the front maybe even something with an LED light so you can spot it right away.

Also, YOU THINK you may got a bag that will stand out, but sweetie there are 3k other people thinking the same way and I bet someone else has the same bag as you. So one year I attached a bandanna, another year I attached tassels, and my last year I had a giant Hello Kitty Tag

And stickers, you could slap on some stickers on your devices if you do choose to use the charging tent. That way you can spot your electronic item and have it stick out from the rest. Because believe me, you dont want to sit in there for hours on end because that is just plain boring.

So if you have any other hacks you would like to share please do. This is what the love bubble is about.. sharing what works to help life on the ride much more easier for others

Battery Packs for AIDS/LifeCycle 2015

One very important item that I find very useful when out for a few days with limited charging power is to get a battery pack. Below you will find a list with purchase location to buy for your next adventure. It doesnt have to be for AIDS/LifeCycle which is a 7 day cycling event but for any situation this may be helpful.

I recommend anything above 10,000mAh with the knowledge you will be able to charge your battery pack at least once or twice out of 7 days. Which will Charge your phone and another small item.

Ive sorted these by prices and all of these have HIGH ratings and good reviews.

I Bonked Hard: Dehydration & Fuel

On February 14th 2015 I participated in my third Tour de Palm Springs. The weekend was just filled with emotions on so many level that all I can think about was "HAMMER MY RIDE".

I wanted to feel good about finishing it in a timely matter, ride through my suffer, and not give a damn about anyone else because of what was running in my mind.

In the morning I was already grumpy because I blamed it on the fact that I couldn't find a cup of coffee to drink and that I didn't have breakfast in a timely fashion, and on top of that we didn't leave on the time that I had planned.

So let me rewind a bit, the previous day I was driving all ready and the same week, I just started a new position, and of course other things were in my mind as far as relationships with people go and they were going to be part of the ride (did I want to see them or did I not want to see them). So I was calmly anxious doing what I do best, trying not to show my emotions and not messing it up for others and to keep my cool.

But inside everything was manifesting.

So to move forward, I BONKED.

My body didnt want to continue, I was a wreck. I slowed my pace down big time and I felt like throwing my bike in the desert and hoping that my tantrum would correct this crappy feeling I was having.

Thank goodness I had a cliff bar with me and it helped settle a little bit of the struggle I was having. I was still frustrated & not in the mood but enough to keep peddling forward.

Made it to the lunch stop had a PB&J and continued with my ride, I started to slow again and my body was hurting. I told the people I was riding with to go ahead and that's when it hit me. About after 5 miles I had to pull over and stop. I had chills running in my body but what struck me was that it was really hot outside and the fact that I had chills freaked me out.

That's when I realized I was dehydrated & that I didn't get enough food in my system.

All i can think of was diet coke and snickers. My friend McCray rode with me to the groceries where I bought those evil goodness, since that's what I was craving. It actually fueled me to the last rest stop. That's when I was chugging water and eating more, I felt sooo much better and had enough to "hammer" the last 10miles of the ride.

A few lessons learned from this:
• hydrate the night before
• hydrate in the morning
• hydrate hydrate hydrate!
• eat a good meal the night before
• get a lot of rest before a big ride
• get the fuel you need in the morning in a calmly manner. (ie: not rushed)
• hydrate during the ride
• take advantage of the food provided by the SAG stops. (That was something I didn't do since I was not in the proper head space I should of been do to above mentioned "pre game" care)
• don't let your emotions eat you up and remember to just live in the moment
• make the best of your day.

Overall things worked out. I did get closure on things I wanted closure on. Despite my hard bonk, I did enjoy my ride and rode a total of 113miles that day. Things happened and you need to keep moving forward.

I was thankful to be in Palm Springs as a little getaway.

Keep peddling my friends!

Tour de Palms Springs - "Playing Rabbit"

Here I am who ended up riding with these fast guys for about a miles or 2. These guys were fast and kept me on my toes. One of the guys zoomed past me but i was close enough still but the other guy was trying to keep up and started to get a pull from me. Overall it was fun and its part of the jou why i love cycling.

DV2 Anniversary Ride 2015

On January 31st I had a pleasure of riding with an awesome group from the Brentwood area. I want to continuing riding with this group, powerful but courteous of other riders. The respect that they have for each other is something I look for.

I will continue to ride with my other groups, Wednesday Mikes Bikes Passo Del Diablo, ALC, & part time Mikes Bikes Sat Group... whewww a lot of different groups. And on top of that starting my own club Velo Beards - catering to the Bearded Rider.

But i need to start setting my base and not become the Lone Wolf team.

Anyways, here we are in the clip. The ride started in Brentwood and I jumped on board from Pittsburg and we headed to Benicia and headed back to Brentwood.
I rode a total of 78miles.

This ride was the 1st Anniversary Ride for the group and I could not miss it.We rode on HWY 4 which was new to a lot of riders. Some were intrigued by the fact we rode on the freeway..

so here is a clip of us clibing HWY 4!

enjoy!!

Beard Descend on one of the 3 Bears

I wanted to change the camera view and show myself this time instead of showing what's in front of me. And plus who doesn't want to see a a snot rocket and a beard in the wind.

"My Beard Beneath the Wind"

Grizzly Peak Descend

One of my favorite descends in the Oakland hills. This is on Grizzly Peak to Gold Course.

As you can see a few bumps in the road made my camera knock over a few times. I will find a way to fix it.

RESTART 2015

So here I am.. I revamped my site again. Im doing this in a "blog style" this time to share with all of you guys what is going on in my world.

Just like what someone told me.. I am like an onion, so many layers and you just keep peeling away and there is more. Pretty much it except I try to avoid the whole making you cry deal.

I do have some old posts on here from about 5yrs ago and again that was the past and I willing to open up.

I know I will share a lot of my cycling adventures, home things, and just life in general. Since my my mind is all over the place, this will be my place to share what is going on.

Enjoy and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Descending Mt Diablo (North Gate)

Hundreds of riders descending Mt Diablo after our race. We had to wait until the last rider crossed the finish line. For safety reasons, we were escorted by a vehicle in front of the group (you can see it briefly in some of the shots) so we were not going full speed and the roads were closed to traffic until we were off of the mountain.
